just an excerpt from a note i wrote about thailand… i’m short on words lately, so that’s why this is not so long.
eh hem:
hey!! it went really really good! i really felt like i really filled a need. i was with 13 highschoolers while their parents were in conference. they kids ranged from 10 years old to 17. so it was quite a mix. but it was good…most of them were around 14. all very mature, easy to get along with..it was a small enough group that there weren’t any problems. i did a devotion in the mornings with them, then we played games till lunch. after lunch we swam, then did a big scavenger hunt type game each day… it was good, we were a small enough group that we could just “hang out”.
i really didn’t expect it to go so smoothely….especially since i got food poisoning before the conference started! my stomach was not happy with me most of the conf…i had no appetite and thai food is not appealing to me now :) though the smell wasn’t the best even before i got sick :p but God def gave me the energy despite, and the devotionals worked out much better than i could have done on my own- i was esp. scared about those.
i also got to wander around bangkok on my own for two full days total, that was awesome. :) asia gave me culture shock.
really, the overwheleming overall feeling was… ‘there are so many people in this world’. i’ve lived in st petersburg, where there were 9mill people but all in stacked-high apt buildings so you didn’t feel like the city was huge. then i lived in college station, which is small and everyone’s the same. then i lived in israel, where you can drive across the country in 8 hours. but asia… the city was massive. SO many people. i don’t know how God does it, really.
you think christians are doing “pretty good” at reaching people till you go somewhere like that.
there are so many people in this world.
anyway, that’ sthe short version. my fingers are cold so it’s kinda hard to type right now… oh, that was another good thing. it was HOT in thailand :) i even got a tan.
hehe
